JOURNEY TO ZERO: RENTAL OPERATIONS

Starting in 2017, VRR began working with suppliers to reduce the amount of waste associated with rental gear by eliminating packaging for individual items.

Bindings were packaged individually. Now, there are four pairs per box.
Annual waste reduction: 2,900 boxes, 1,400 pounds of cardboard

Skis were shipped individually in cardboard boxes. Now, 120 pairs of skis are packaged together per pallet.
Annual waste reduction: 290 boxes, 870 pounds of cardboard

Poles were wrapped in plastic. Now, they’re coated in slightly thicker paint and rubber-banded together.
Annual waste reduction: 75,000 plastic bags, 150,000 hang tags, 225,000 rubber bands

Helmets were individually packaged in plastic and boxes. Now, several helmets come together in the same box.
Annual waste reduction: 5,700 plastic bags, 11,400 boxes, 6,840 pounds of cardboard

Since 2017, these changes have eliminated a total of:

  • 81,000 plastic bags
  • 9,200 pounds of cardboard
  • 9,000 boxes
  • 375,000 pieces of misc. packaging & materials

VRR’s leadership has inspired vendors to make these changes with all of their rental retailers going forward. Thank you, VRR, for your Commitment to Zero!
