Celebrating Black History Month: Meet Cynthia Appiah

In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting information that acknowledges, honors, and celebrates accomplishments that embodies this month. This week, meet Cynthia Appiah, a Canadian bobsledder who has hopes of breaking stereotypes of what winter athletes look like in the current Olympic games. Her bobsledding journey began at Whistler where she was first inspired to compete after watching a fellow Black bobsledder, Shelley-Ann Brown, win silver in a local competition. She recalled that she saw herself in Brown and was curious to learn more. As a Black woman in a predominantly white sport, Appiah hopes to inspire the next generation and to “break down these stereotypes, and break down the mold of what typical winter athlete can look like, and how successful we can be” in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Read more about her story here. Be sure to cheer on Appiah and Team Canada during the Games.
